Sharpen your tools

You must learn how to properly sharpen your tools if you want to be a great woodworker. Without sharp tools, woodworking becomes very tedious and frustrating. In this lesson, you'll learn how to produce razor sharp cutting edges on any type of tool blade. You'll also learn how to sharpen various types of handtools. Here are some examples of these techniques.

Find out the moisture content of your wood

Moisture in wood varies with time of year. Wood cut during the winter months will have less moisture than wood that was cut in spring. However, it's still important to know the moisture content of your wood, as it can ruin a perfectly good woodworking project. If you don't know the moisture content of your wood, it's important to know how to dry it properly and season it to achieve the lowest possible moisture content.

Select the right stain

First, decide which wood stain is best for your project. It is difficult to know which wood stain to use without first sanding your work. Different wood species react differently to stain, and they may also respond differently to different grits of sandpaper. Therefore, you should test the stain by using a small sample of wood. It is also a good idea use the same type wood and the same method of preparation. If you are using a darker stain, it is unlikely that it will blend well with a lighter one. A medium brown stain is a better choice if you are unsure. It will be more durable, versatile, and long-lasting.

How To

How to stain wood

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

There are several ways to apply stains to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Others use a solution made up of water and dye, which is then applied directly onto the wood. You can mix stains into varnishes or paints to make them part of your finish coat.

Preparing your wood for staining is the first thing to do. Clean the wood to get rid of any grease, dirt or other substances that might be detrimental to the stain's application. Sanding can smoothen out scratches and uneven spots. The next step is to choose the stain type you want. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. The best non-penetrating colors are those that work with light colors like maple.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. Paintbrushes are great for applying stain because they allow you to evenly spread the liquid across the surface. A few rags are also handy to clean up any spillages after you have finished painting. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. Use soap and warm water to remove dust and grime. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. Begin at one end and spray or brush the stain on the wood. You should work slowly and carefully. Continue moving along the grain until you reach your opposite end. You must be careful not to allow the stain to drip off the wood's edges. Before proceeding to the next step, let the stain dry thoroughly.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
