How To

How to stain wood

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. The wood will turn from white to brownish-red due to the chemical reaction. While oak is the most widely used type of wood for staining purposes, other types of wood are also available.

There are many methods to apply stain to wood surfaces. You can mix the stain with a solvent, such as turpentine, and spray it onto the wood. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

Preparing the surface for staining wood is the first step. Clean the wood to get rid of any grease, dirt or other substances that might be detrimental to the stain's application. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper than non-penetrating stains, which makes them great for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. Paintbrushes are great for applying stain because they allow you to evenly spread the liquid across the surface. To remove any stains left behind after painting, you will need some rags. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

After you have prepared your materials for staining, clean the area. You can remove grime and dirt with warm water and soap. Use a dampened rag and clean water to wipe the furniture. You should remove any debris, especially if your plan is to stain darker wood.

Apply the stain. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. You should work slowly and carefully. Continue moving along the grain until you reach your opposite end. Keep the stain from dripping off the wood's surface. Before proceeding to the next step, let the stain dry thoroughly.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Let the third coat dry overnight before you sand the final coat.
