Blanks made from hard maple bowl

Hard Maple Bowl Blanks might be a good choice for you if you're a woodturner. These bowl blanks measure 6 inches in width and 2 inches in thickness. Although it is very strong, this hard wood is not the easiest to use. Its heartwood color uniformly pale reddish-brown, while its sapwood color has a red tinge. You can choose to have your blanks figured or quartered, depending upon what style you prefer.

This is a common way to cut the wood into different sizes. These segments are comprised of six to seven smaller pieces from Hard Maple, Black Walnut or another species. These bowl blanks of Hard Maple are usually the most economical. If you prefer a darker wood, Black Walnut, Paduak or Purpleheart are all options. All these wood types are affordable and readily available on American markets.

Curly Maple Turning Blanks

Curly Maple blanks can be used to make spoons and cue sticks. These wood blanks make it easy to turn spoons or spindles, knives and peppermills. You can order as much or little as you need. While each blank is unique in its own way, all of them share certain characteristics. These blanks can be used to turn solid blocks of curly maple.

Curly maple is an unusual figured type of maple that presents unusual waves or markings. This wood is compatible with almost all maple trees. The characteristic pattern develops when the branches are arranged so that the trunk meets the roots in a "Y". Some maples have curly hair genes. Curly maples are prized because of their musical instruments, guitars, or other wood crafts.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will help you join two pieces of wooden together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. Dowel joinery might be a better option if your wood is not straight or flat. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. To start, measure and mark where you want to put the pocket hole joint. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue both sides together. Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Connect the pieces. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trimming the joinery after glue has completely dried.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
