FAQ

Can I refinish furniture that I make?

Yes! There are plenty of ways to refinish old pieces of furniture without having to pay a pro. Here are a few ideas:

Use sandpaper on the surface to remove any stains or scratches. Then wipe down the surface with a clean cloth.

Apply clear polyurethane finish. Let dry completely before moving furniture around.

Use acrylic paint to paint furniture.

Instead of painting, use stain. Furniture will look richer with the stain.

Use shellac wax. The wax will add shine to the wood and protect it.

How much does a hobbyist need to invest in getting started?

To start your own woodworking company, you will likely need capital to purchase the necessary tools and other supplies. You can start by purchasing a small table saw and drill press as well as a circular saw, circular saw, jigsaw and sanding machines. These items aren’t too expensive so you won’t have to break the bank.

Is there anything else I should know about woodworking?

Furniture making is a laborious task. It's easy not to appreciate how hard it is. Finding the right wood for the project is the hardest part. It is difficult to choose between the various types of wood.

The problem with wood is that not all wood properties are the same. Some woods will crack or warp with time. Others will split or crack. These are important considerations to make before you purchase wood.

Is it possible to learn woodworking by yourself?

You can learn everything best by doing. Woodworking is an art form that requires patience, practice, skill, and experience. Every craft takes practice and patience.

You can learn the most effective way to master a skill is by actually doing it. Start small and then build upon what you've learned.

Statistics

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)

How To

How to make wood joint

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. Try dowel joinery instead if your wood doesn't look straight. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. Use a jigsaw or handheld drilling machine to drill 3/8 inch deep holes at the ends of each wood piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will ensure that the joint doesn't split.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes before you attach the pieces.
  4. Secure the pieces together. Once the glue has dried, clamp the pieces together so they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
