There are three main steps in painting a shed, including preparation, choosing a stain, and applying multiple coats. You will need to protect the interior surfaces with a weatherproof coating. Here are some tips when painting a shed.

How to prepare to paint a shed

There are many important steps to follow before you paint your garden shed, storage shed or other outdoor structures. These are the steps you need to take in order to paint your shed. First, you must remove any cover on plants, pathways or accessories. Sand the surfaces with a sandpaper to remove any paint. You'll need to apply primer next. The roller should not be overloaded. After the primer has dried, apply a thin coat of paint.

How to choose a paint

Bold colors are best for adding color to your shed. If you have bright flowers in your garden, a bright blue or yellow will complement those. To complement bright flowers, you can also use the colors of the shed. You can even choose a bold color that matches the color of your home. You might prefer to stick with blue and orange if your preference is for a more traditional look.

How to choose a stain

It is important to choose a stain or paint for your shed in order to preserve its beauty and protect it from the elements. Oil-based stains are more susceptible to black mould, which can negatively affect your shed's appearance. You can go greener with a latex coating. The UV rays are also not affected by latex. Additionally, most stains require two coats and no topcoat.

Multi-coating

Acrylic latex or water-based paint can be used to paint sheds. The acrylic latex is more durable and safer for the environment. Ask someone at the garden center for their advice when you are choosing a paint to paint your shed. It's best to choose a paint that lasts for many years if you plan on painting the shed yourself.

Choose a color

There are many shades available for your shed's exterior. Consider a stylish shade of gray if you are looking for a color that will complement the natural beauty in your garden. You can choose a darker charcoal shade, such Cyberspace SW 7076 or a more subtle shade like Livingsten Gray 409C. Both of these shades complement many architectural styles. It can be difficult to choose a color for painting sheds, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. Use a jigsaw or handheld drilling machine to drill 3/8 inch deep holes at the ends of each wood piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue to both sides of the wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Connect the pieces. After the glue has dried completely, you can clamp the pieces together until they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

Make sure to leave enough room between the pieces so that you can turn them inside and out.
