Construction of a Scroll Saw Shadow Box

gluing wood panels

A shadow box made from scroll saws is a great way to display photographs or artwork. A small shadowbox can bring a sense to wonder. You can make a simple scene with seven layers of 1/4 inch Baltic Birch plywood. It measures approximately four inches square by 1.75 inches thick. Small details add interest and awe to the finished piece. An increase in the size of a shadowbox would require more detail and make it more difficult. This is the scene that appears on the shadowbox's inside.

What is the difference of plywood and particleboard?

Plywood is made of layers of wood that are pressed together under pressure. Plywood is available in a variety of thicknesses. It is often used to make cabinets or flooring. How To

How to make wood joint

This tutorial will show you how to join two pieces of wood together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. Dowel joinery might be a better option if your wood is not straight or flat. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. You can sand the edges of the wood to ensure that it doesn't split.
  3. Glue together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trimming the joinery after glue has completely dried.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
